The free-spiritedness and open nature of Ibiza means that pretty much the whole island is gay-friendly and welcoming. Legendary club nights such as La Troya at Space and Supermartxe at Privilege are especially popular amongst LGBT tourists and probably need no introduction here. The same goes for the renowned gay area Calle de La Virgen, whose pavements are lined with exciting bars, parades and shows. But for those looking for places to relax and have a cosy drink, where to sleep or where to get the night going, these recommendations will set you up for a great holiday.
THE PURPLE
The Purple by Ibiza Feeling is a cosy hotel in San Antonio which describes itself as “more than gay friendly”. It is the first of its type on the island in that it is dedicated exclusively to LGBT customers and promises an escape from overcrowded, noisy establishments. Aside from first-class accommodation, the hotel offers a chilled pool terrace and courtyard with two bars and restaurant “A Pinch of Purple” ready to prepare your poolside snacks.
CENIT POOL
Part of the gay-friendly hotel Cenits’ facilities, the pool area is also frequented by non-guests who want to while away a relaxing day. This welcoming environment offers great views as well as delicious food available from the restaurant. The atmosphere livens up in the evening and expert mixologists serve up a wide range of cocktails which, at 7.50€ each, won’t break the bank either
MONALISA
Nestled in the Old Market area of Ibiza Town, Monalisa is a cocktail bar praised for its mojitos, who many claim to be the best they have ever tried. The interior is luxuriously decorated with red drapes and armchairs, but it also has an outside terrace to people watch and soak up the atmosphere. Add to this good music, beautiful waiters and a friendly vibe and it makes a great start to your night out. The downside here is that you are paying for location and quality, making the drinks a little pricier than other areas of Ibiza, but no more expensive than anywhere else within this zone.
SUNRISE
Although it is also gay and hetero-friendly, Sunrise is the only officially lesbian bar on the island. It is extravagantly decorated with neon lights and swings hanging from the ceiling, it is one of the coolest bars along the infamous Calle de la Virgen. Serving up good-quality cocktails and with a prime location in this buzzing area it’s worth arriving a little earlier to guarantee a table. Similarly to Monalisa you are paying for the location, although it is affordable and still cheaper than heading to a larger night club.
GAY PRIDE IBIZA
For the last two years Ibiza has hosted it’s very own gay pride festival over 6 days in the summer. The second edition which occurred this year between the 6-12th of June was another great success and included huge parties, processions, art exhibitions, book readings and theatre productions. Keep your eyes peeled for next years’ dates as this is set to be an ever-expanding festival which is sure to attract more and more people each year.
